Trends for 2020
2020 is now approaching and it is time to look at the trends in the field of graphic design that will become more established next year, between confirmations and surprises.
We have identified five, which we list in absolutely random order. They are the most important in our opinion, even if in reality the discussion could easily be expanded to include at least double those mentioned. In fact, graphics are a world to which many sectors look with interest, from fashion to home design & interior just to name a couple and, undoubtedly, this is where the trends that will emerge in the months and also in the following years are born.
Maxi typography
2019 has only seen a shy start, but 2020 seems to be the year of the definitive consecration of the maxi typography in every sense. Starting with the size of the lettering which will be oversized and force designers to break words and go beyond the edges of the composition.
Not only that, the letters will come alive, they will also be enriched with decorative elements, flourishing literally to give greater prominence to the text and partially or completely replacing the function that should be the part of the visual, in an extraordinarily creative fusion. Where we won't find elaborate lettering, for sure this will be huge in terms of thickness. Bold against thin in short.
Text masks
Masks with images have already established themselves a few years ago, especially in the layout of the portrait with the landscape, but given the trend of bold lettering, it would be a mistake not to consider this as a line that in fact, going to evolve a concept graphic already explored, it would seem to project itself in 2020 towards a completely autonomous, mature and independent trend compared to that of maxi typography.
3D Realism / Depth
One might think that the 3D trend has already reached its peak in 2019 but, considering the opportunities of modern technologies and the powerful capabilities of the main updated software (see the Adobe news) we are certainly going towards a strengthening rather than a resizing of the trend. For this reason, 3D especially on the web and especially combined with other techniques such as photography or two-dimensional objects still has a lot to say.

Metal surfaces
It seemed to represent an already archived experience and instead, incredibly, the use of metallic materials in graphic design has returned to being ultra trendy for the brand identity and the product design. With a clear preference for gold, on a black and opaque background. Many brands have chosen to characterize their lines that are inspired by luxury and, when combined with single-color emboss treatments, they express the maximum of refinement.
Geometric shapes
In contrast to the process that wants the lettering to become more articulated, a new trend sees the design of subjects and figures go towards a geometrization, an apparent simplification that in reality forces the designer to an effort that is anything but banal, looking for a forms as realistic as possible even if defined only by elementary geometric elements. The result? To be amazed.
